2024 – THE KEEP 4K BLU RAY FROM VINEGAR SYNDROME - In 2024 we finally got the news we had all been wating for. A 4K release of the theatrical version of The Keep from Vinegar Syndrome. The set included 4K Ultra HD and Region A Blu-rays, created from a new scan of the original 35mm negatives. Unfortunately the audio did not get a surround sound upgrade, but the picture quality of this release was stunning. It included many extras, such as a commentary track and interviews. One of those was an revealing interview with co-composer Johannes Schmoelling of Tangerine Dream.

Bonus Features:
1. 2-disc Set: 4K Ultra HD / Region A Blu-ray
2. 4K UHD presented in Dolby Vision High-Dynamic-Range
3. Newly scanned & restored in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative

2020 – THE KEEP - Pilots Of Purple Twilight: The Virgin Recordings 1980-1983 - In 2020 Virgin released a modified version of the 1997 official soundtrack of The Keep released by TDI. It was included in the Pilots Of Purple Twilight: The Virgin Recordings 1980-1983 CD/LP collection on CD #10. It featured 13 of the 16 tracks from the TDI release, minus the addtional instrumentation added for the TDI version. The tracks that were removed are Sign in the Dark, Weird Village, and Love and Destiny. A stand-alone streaming/downloadable version of the soundtrack was also released in 2020. The tracks on this release are in their supposed "original" order, which differs from the 1997 TDI version. The sound quality of this master is slightly better than the TDI version, in my opinion, but I think the revised track order in the 1997 version flows better than this original track order.

The Pilots Of Purple Twilight box aslo includes the full two our Dominion Theatre London concert from November 6th 1982, which the 1982 Logos Live album was culled from. It includes a lot of music that was later used in The Keep film, but did not appear on either this soundtrack or the remixed 1997 version.

This is claimed to be from the "original master tapes TD delivered to Virgin in late 1983", but in 2024 TD member Johannes Schmoelling cast doubt on that claim. According to Johannes, the three composers - Frank, Froese, and him - never created a music mix for a soundtrack release. He said up to the point he left the band in Summer 1985, and Christoph left in 1987, there was never, ever an authorized soundtrack of The Keep created. In referring to the 1997 TDI release on CD, he said the tracks Heritage Survival and Sign in the Dark are pieces of music which TD usually played in 1982 concerts, but those were not created for or used in The Keep. He recalled the track Night in Romania, which is in the movie, but noted that during the production of the score, it was named Rejuvenation Theme. It was another composition created prior to the film and performed live in 1982. He said other tracks, like Ancient Powerplant, he had never heard before. This reinforces the belief that this was simply an Edgar Froese compilation of his solo work and a few unreleased TD tracks that he assembled many years later, not during the film production.

Like the 1997 TDI version of The Keep, this release only contains about 6 minutes of actual music used in the film. I consider this and the TDI version more of a stand alone Tangerine Dream/Edgar Froese studio album, with little relation to the actual The Keep film score. If you make a custom mix, as I did, combining this album with Sign in the Dark and Weird Village from the TDI version, and the bootleg track called Evil Healing Alternate Theme or Betrayal (a different, and superior version of The Challenger's Arrival) it is a rather good, if a bit uneven, Virgin era Tangerine Dream album. Sort of a lost album that fits in with Logos, White Eagle, and Hyperborea.

Below is a track list with comparisons to the 1997 mix and some of the same tracks that were bootlegged in the 1990s.

1. Puer Natus Est Nobis (Gloria) (Thomas Tallis, arr. Edgar Froese) # * Gloria. Identical to the track played on German radio in 1987. The singing voice is solo here before the music starts 30 seconds into the song. The music starts almost immediately in the 1997 TDI remixed version. It also sounds like an dditional layer of synth music was added to that version that is not on this original version, but it could just be the EQ differences I am hearing. A small section of Gloria was used in the film, but this recording is completely different and does not include that section of the mass.
2. Arx Allemand (Edgar Froese) Not used in the film. Slightly longer than the 1997 TDI version. This original version includes wind noises in the beginning and throughout the song that were removed for the later 1997 TDI mix. This version also includes an additional keyboard playing high octave runs of the melody in places that was removed from the TDI version.
3. Truth and Fiction (Edgar Froese) Not used in the film. Identical to the 1997 TDI release.
4. The Silver Seal (Edgar Froese / Johannes Schmoelling) Not used in the film. Identical to the 1997 TDI release.
5. Ancient Powerplant (Edgar Froese) * Not used in the film. Identical to the 1997 TDI release. Same track as Fisherman's Morning played on German radio in 1989. Johannes Schmorelling said he had never heard this track before, so it definitely was not composed for The Keep.
6. Supernatural Accomplice (Edgar Froese) # Identical to the 1997 TDI release. The first few minutes of this track appear in the film. The rest of the track, although not in the film, fits with the film music. The middle section of the music is similar to the track Deadly Silver Crosses from the First Mix bootleg, which was used as the film trailer music.
7. The Challenger's Arrival (Edgar Froese) *# Identical to the 1997 TDI version until around the 3:00 mark where over a minute of additional music was added for that version. The TDI version is better in my opinion. Although this track bears little resemblance to anything in the film, the synth chords and ascending tones from the middle section (minus drums and guitar) were used in the scene where Cuza makes his bargain with Molasar. Also known as Sailing Mission/Evil healing. This is the same track as Evil Healing from the First Mix and Blue Moon bootlegs. Another version of this track, called Betrayal or Evil healing Alternate Theme, includes identical guitar, but a different intro and heavier drums and synth chords. It has appeared on several The Keep bootlegs like The Keep Utimate Edition.
8. Heritage Survival (Edgar Froese / Christoph Franke / Johannes Schmoelling) Not used in the film. Approximately 28 seconds of music is missing from the beginning this version that was added to the 1997 TDI version, and over a minute of music from the end of the this original version is missing from the TDI version. This is the Rush of Joy section of the 1982 live concerts with additional instrumentation added.
9. Parallel Words (Edgar Froese / Johannes Schmoelling) Not used in the film. Identical to the 1997 TDI track called Parallel Worlds. Apparently "worlds" was a typo on the TDI releases.
10. Canzone (Edgar Froese / Johannes Schmoelling) # This version and the 1997 TDI version are completely different. The first two minutes and 22 seconds and everything after the 3:20 mark does not exist in the TDI version. From 2:22-3:20 the music on this track is identical to the repeating sampled music by Schmoelling that was used for the film version, used in the scene where Cuza takes the Talisman from The Keep. This same movie music is in the TDI version, but a synth melody has been added over it. The TDI version also adds about 1 minute and 40 second of different music at the end that is not in this version.
11. Voices from a Common Land (Edgar Froese / Christoph Franke / Johannes Schmoelling)  * Not used in the film. Identical to the 1997 TDI release and identical to the track played on German radio in 1987. Also known as Romanian Road.
12. Wardays Sunrise (Edgar Froese) Not used in the film. Identical to the 1997 TDI release. Similar sound and guitar as The Challengers Arrival.
13. The Night in Romania (Edgar Froese)  # > Identical to the 1997 TDI release. Appears in the film on three occasions, more-or-less as presented here. Same music as the Renewed Purpose section of the 1982 live concerts.

Total Time: 51 minutes

# contains music heard in the film, or similar to the music heard in the film.
* previously released on the 1994 BLUE MOON bootleg and the German radio broadcasts.
> previously released 1997 LOGOSTYPES/LOGOTYPES bootleg, with original track title

2020 – THE KEEP The Keep (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack / Remastered 2020) - This is a stand-alone 13-track streaming version of the soundtack included in the Pilots Of Purple Twilight: The Virgin Recordings 1980-1983 CD/LP collection on CD #10, described above. It was released by Virgin in 2020. A slightly different, 16 track remixed version of this had already been released by TDI in 1997. It included addtional instrumentation and additional tracks (Sign in the Dark, Weird Village, and Love and Destiny) that were not included in this version, and a slightly different track order.

Like that 1997 TDI version of The Keep soundtrack, this release only contains about 6 minutes of actual music used in the film. This stand-alone version was released on Apple Music, Amazon, Spotify, and other streaming services.

Via Vision DVD box artwork from the official 2020 DVD release

2020 – THE KEEP DVD - After many years of release announcements that were ultimately cancelled, the first officially authorized DVD of The Keep was finally released. It was distributed by the Australian company ViaVision, under license from Paramount. It is a widescreen release with a 2.0 stereo soundtrack. Unfortunately the picture quality ranges from standard definition in places to fuzzy VHS quality in others, similar to the streaming version of the movie. I think this is actually taken from the old Laser Disk master of the film, which is 425 lines of resolution, rather than the 480 lines of resolution a DVD is capable of. This explains why they did not bother with a hi-def Blu Ray release, since DVD is a long outdated format. The soundtrack sounds identical to the Laser Disk version, with lots of hiss in places. It is the best officially released version of the film currently available, but only a minor step above the bootleg VHS or Laser Disk rips of the film.

The Keep original Soundtrack The Keep original Soundtrack

The Keep original Soundtrack

2013 – THE KEEP ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS / 30th ANNIVERSARY EDITION from Restoration Project (2 CD's) - This bootleg is the closest thing to having the actual original soundtrack recordings used in the film. It has been circulated in online file sharing a few times, is available on youtube, and various CD bootlegs have been sold with audio ripped from Youtube. The quality is on par with the Blade Runner Esper Edition bootleg and the stellar Blade Runner EMS Recombination bootlegs. I had a hand in cleaning up and mixing almost every track on this version, as well as doing the cover art, but it really was a group effort by a small team of die hard Tangerine Dream fans. Only about 5 copies were made on CD and shared freely among the people who put it together and friends. Released on the 30th anniversary of the original motion picture release, this soundtrack includes every major Tangerine Dream music cue from the film, roughly in chronological order, with a nearly a two hour running time.

Most of the tracks on this Restoration Project CD were taken directly from the original TD source material - The 1982 live concert recordings, the best versions of the actual music tracks created by Tangerine Dream for the film (studio out takes, the TDI OST release, a cassette tape copy of some of the actual score mixing music), isolated sections of the actual film score, and remixes from those sources to recreate the film versions. There is more film music material here than on any previous bootleg, including several film tracks never before released. None of these tracks are repeats of the exact same tracks from previous bootlegs, and many match what was heard in the film exactly. You won't find much of the extra, non-film music from previous bootlegs here, just tracks that were used for the film, or longer tracks of which shorter sections of music were taken for the film. The sound quality on most of the tracks is good to very good, and there is very little evidence of the movie sound effects. Several of the tracks have hiss noise, betraying the nature of some of the 30 year old source tapes used.

With the exception of the alternate version of The Journey, the bonus tracks are nothing special and not very different from the versions on disk 1. I think the collection would have been better without them, but they do fill out the rest of disk 2.

2010, 2013 - THE KEEP on Amazon Instant Video and Netflix – The widescreen version of the film (apparently taken from the Laser Disk master) streamed on Netflix, Sky Movies HD, and was offered on Amazon Instant Video for a short period in 2010 and 2013. The film has periodically popped up on Netflix since 1999. There are reports that a version shown had parts of Tangerine Dream's music score replaced with other music, and other reports stating the music was the same. I have watched the Netflix version and the music is identical to the theatrical release and the picture looks like the laser disk master.

2008 - THE KEEP CUES from Ricochet Dream – This was a limited edition CD made for fans attending the Ricochet Gathering, an annual get-together of electronic musicians celebrating the pioneers of that style of music from Berlin, with each event having a theme. This one was held in Transylvania, Romania in 2008, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Tangerine Dream's music for The Keep. This CD, which is just audio recorded from the laser disk release of The Keep, was provided for musicians attending the Gathering 'to study and gain inspiration'. Live, improvised performances were recorded on November 11, 2008 and some of that music was released in 2010 on a limited CD called Ricochet Gathering - Keep On, from Ricochet Dream.

The Keep Cues was produced by Vic Rec of Ricochet Dreams Records, limited to 222, and each was serial numbered. Cover art was by Stéphane Piter, who has his own French website about The Keep (according to Stéphane as of September 2012 he had removed almost all of the content regarding the film because he was making a documentary about The Keep). The CD had seven tracks, but no track titles. The label states it was licensed from Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Nashville, TN, but it looks like a typical bootleg. In 2007 Sony/ATV bought Famous Music, and with it the rights to publish music from Viacom's Paramount Pictures subsidiary, owners of The Keep. Virgin Music owns rights to publish (some) of the music material in The Keep, but all music content on this CD was taken directly from The Keep laser disk audio track (including sound effects) so apparently Virgin was not involved.

2004 - The Keep DVD (cancelled) – Paramount Home Video announced that The Keep would be coming to DVD in November 2004, with just the film and no extras included. November came around and yet again, the release was cancelled, but the film was being shown on the Mystery Channel that year.

In anticipation of the DVD release author F. Paul Wilson, who has no love for the film version of his book, made this statement on his Repairman Jack website in early 2004:

"According to a number of sources Paramount Home Entertainment is releasing "The Keep" on DVD this fall (street date = 11/30) with no extras. I’m considering remedying that. I’ve spoken to Doug Winter (critic, biographer, novelist, columnist for Video Watchdog) and David Schow (screenwriter and novelist) – both acerbic wits with strong opinions about the film – and asked them if they’d be interested in joining me for a commentary track. They are. The plan: We’ll sit down in a studio sometime in August when David is on the East Coast. We’ll run the film and shoot our mouths off for 96 minutes. Then we’ll put it onto CDs and sell them to anyone who’d want to play it along with the movie.

A commentary track that trashes the film…I don’t think this has ever been done before. Could get a lot of press. Then again, it may not. Either way it’ll be a kick."

Supposedly this film-trashing commentary track was actually recorded.

2004 - TANGERINE TREE VOLUME 54, The Keep: An Alternative View – This collection was assembled from the previously released bootlegs for the Tangerine Tree/Tangerine Leaves project, (2002-2006), the Laser Disk sountrack, and the master tape used for the First Mix and Blue Moon bootlegs, which originated on German radio. It was intended to be a definitive archive of The Keep music and includes tracks from most of the previous releases. It is one of the best compilations of music used in the film, including alternate versions, as well as other music composed for but not used in the film. The sound quality does sound better than the First Mix/Blue Moon version of the same tracks.

You can download the individual tracks from this version HERE.

1. Stormbringer (Main Titles) (7:07) - A mix of Dinu Pass and The Keep Main Title from the Blue Moon bootleg
2. Dinu Pass (4:46)
3. Release (8:12)

5. Black Soldiers (5:14)
6. Reunion (Cuza’s Theme) (4:13) - Taken from the Logotypes bootleg
7. Gloria (3:15) - This is from the original master tape used for the Blue Moon version. The 1997 TDI version was altered with additional keyboards.
8. Incarnation (Molasar’s Theme) (5:54) - Taken from Logos, but it sounds as if it has been remixed to match the film version
9. Betrayal (3:51) - This is the track Evil Healing track from the First Mix bootleg and is similar to Challengers Arrival.
10. Glaeken’s Death (6:31)
11. Talisman (3:24) - taken from the Laser Disk
12. The Final Conflict (4:47)
13. The Evil Within (8:52)
14. Fisherman’s Morning (3:23)
15. Walking In The Air (End Titles) (3:35) - taken from the Laser Disk

2003 - TANGERINE LEAVES VOLUME 1: London 1982 – This is the full two our concert in which the 1982 Logos Live album was culled from. Released as part of the Tangerine Tree/Tangerine Leaves project (2002-2006), a series of semi–authorized bootleg recordings. It was a massive project to archive all of the best known audience and soundboard recordings of TD live performances. The recording quality is not as good as the Tangerine Tree Croydon recording, but this is the entire concert, plus part of the sound check. Edited and remixed sections of the original concert recordings were used by Michael Mann for the film score of The Keep, noted below. A superior version of this concerts was included in the Pilots Of Purple Twilight: The Virgin Recordings 1980-1983 CD/LP collection on CD #10, released in 2020. It was taken from the original master tapes.

1:14:11 Logos Black - A remixed version of this was used in The Keep for the scene where Kaempffer confronts Molasar, known as Incarnation (Molasar's Theme), Death of Woermann and Kaempffer, and Molasar Aftermath and Death of Kaempffer on later bootlegs of The Keep music. It is one of the most effective pieces of music in the film.

2002 - TANGERINE TREE VOLUME 12: Croydon 1982 - This is another performance of the 1982 tour music, recorded in October. Essentially the same set as the 1982 Logos Live concert listed below, but this is a full two-hour performance. Released in the Tangerine Tree/Tangerine Leaves project (2002-2006), a series of bootleg live recordings spearheaded by TD fan Heiko, and authorized by Edgar Froese. It was a massive project to archive all of the best known audience and soundboard recording of TD live performances. An improved version of Croydon 1982 was released in 2006, providing a much cleaner sounding recording of this concert. Edited and remixed sections of the original concert recordings were used by Michael Mann for the film score of The Keep, noted below.

1. Logos Part I (7:17)
2. Heritage Survival (5:33)
3. Mirage (2:27) - A version of this music was used as the soundtrack for the trailers promoting the film. Also used on some bootlegs of The Keep, although it does not appear in the actual film.

2001? - THE KEEP LP SOUNDTRACK (CD) from Virgin (it is not) – Said to be a bootleg of the supposed official 1984 LP promo soundtrack from Virgin Records that was released when the film was in theaters, then immediately recalled (no real Virgin soundtrack was released back then). In fact this is just another bootleg with a faked cover to make it appear like an unreleased Virgin OST, but the lousy art reproduction and spelling mistakes make it a poor attempt. It states it is Produced by Micheal Mann and Tangerine Dream, but the bootleggers could not even spell Michael correctly. It consists of tracks from previous bootlegs and some obvious mixing and editing to make several of the tracks seem different. Sound quality is very good however.

Side 1
1. Dinu Pass (Reich Approach) - A mix of Dinu Pass an The Keep main title from existing bootleg tracks
2. World After Time - Same as Canzone from the TDI release
3. Silver Crosses - Same as Deadly Silver Crosses from previous bootlegs
4. Supernatual Accomplice - Same as the track on the TDI release
5. Night in Romania - A mix of Night in Romania and Ancient Powerplant from the TDI release

Side 2
1. The Soldiers in Black - a modified mix of The Black Soldiers from previous bootlegs
2. Puer Matius Est Noblis (yes it is mistakenly spelled this way in the art) - Same as the one on the TDI release.
3. Fishermans Village (The Journey Begins) - This is the track Moorland from the Daydream/Moorland single, not the Fisherman's Village from previous bootlegs.
4. Glaekens Quest - Same as the existing bootleg track
5. Brothers in Death - A remixed version of the existing bootleg track including part of the end of Logos Part 1.
